Into the Edwardian: Edwardian Men’s Shirt inspired Lacy Blouse

my shirt experiment, start from a beginner shirt and make it with lots of lace

a.k.a. a sewing marathon

To clarify, THE LACE CUFFS, are the reason I started this project. Whenever I am browsing the internet, google "accidentally" sharing with me pretty antique shirts with great excessive details, aesthetic enough for me to start pulling out my lace trims box.

Here we are, the very first stage of the shirt.

Hand sewn to combine every single strip of lace on the sleeves cuffs. I was tend to add buttons, that's why I left space on both ends that wide enough for placket, but at the end I didn’t.

hand tac every lace to secure before stitch

I understood that Shirt is never easy to make, shirt making was my first lesson in uni to learn about pattern and finishing.

For this project, I am going for a romantic, laid back blouse without collar. I tend to find a more simpler way to make a voluminous body with big puffy sleeves. I was come across with the Edwardian men’s shirt everyone is doing online, a.k.a. the pirate shirt.

Very simple pattern, remeasuring your size and dealing with big rectangles, then all the hard parts are the hand sewing. It’s basically a marathon.

Pin-tucks are must have in my opinion, my recent obsession for every white garment.

I lined up my lace to form a collar like shape at the front and back. The wide lace strap was gifted from the place where I purchased my dead stock fabric. Just perfect amount to decorate my front body.

The small triangle pin-tucks are additional to allow the front to drape. And a little two triangles added on the both sleeve head are used to keep my shirt from pulling down. It is like adding gusset because the opening is straight cut and slit, room should be given for movement.

A little more detail at the hem, a lace straps channel throughout the bottom, can tie up to add volume at the bottom, secure at the back.

It’s look so good when I’m wearing my Edwardian walking skirt. So sad that I can’t get any photo shoot done, promised will share with you one day.
